Rebecca has a strong background in desktop publishing; technical, marketing, and administrative research; writing and editing; as well as project management and production of a variety of publication and presentation projects.  As manager on large projects, she has written, designed format, edited, and coordinated the entire production effort of artists, word processors, authors, editors, and printers.

  •       Researched, wrote, rewrote, and edited marketing fact sheets for Westinghouse Electric Company LLC service products (hardware, software, and training programs). Finished full-color documents printed for external distribution as well as placed on internet.
  •            Researched and wrote copy for illustrated magazine advertisement for Consolidated Clinical Trials, Inc., a firm in the Pittsburgh area specializing in arranging and managing clinical trial studies involving independent physicians and pharmaceutical sponsors.
  •             Researched and wrote text for full-color brochure describing and marketing Corrective Actions Process (CAPs), a proactive corrective action program implemented at Westinghouse.
  •            Wrote and oversaw production of full-color, eight-page quarterly newsletter for Westinghouse Nuclear Services Division, Repair & Replacement Services.
  •             Researched, wrote, edited, and published Westinghouse Qualifications Statement for Decommissioning & Decontamination, a full-color marketing publication.
  •             Rewrote Westinghouse Technical Writing and Editing Styleguide to be used by consulting writers and editors, as well as engineer authors.
  •            Wrote proposal for $1 Energy Fund, a non-profit organization that aids low-income families with utility bills.  $1 Energy was awarded contract, and subsequently used same proposal as boilerplate, winning 2 other contracts that generated additional revenue of $400,000 for agency.
  •       As project lead on numerous proposals, wrote executive summaries, working closely with artist and outside printer; developed specific styleguide to ensure consistency in spelling, abbreviations, and word usage. Working with artist, helped develop appropriate format and design for proposal; managed staff of editors, word processors, artists, and printers.
  •       Researched benefits of various document formats based on scientific data, standard production rules, and author/customer input. Based on resultant presentation to ESBU Information Processing and Technical Communications Department, helped design and promote implementation of new document formats to be used throughout Westinghouse.  Wrote Standard Document Formats Reference Manual.

Eric J. Hayes, Lead Writer, Government Projects

 

Since 1998, Eric J. Hayes has worked as a senior technical writer and editor at the CERT Coordination Center (www.cert.org), which is part of the Networked Systems Survivability (NSS) Program at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI), Carnegie Mellon University.  As a senior technical writer/editor at the SEI, he has written and edited presentations, reports, web pages, customer deliverables, and more about computer and network security for SEI publications, the Department of Defense, and other government clients. Hayes edited the CERT Security Improvement Modules and was credited as the primary editor for the material from these modules used to produce the book The CERT(r) Guide to System and Network Security Practices, published by Addison-Wesley. Hayes also serves as the intellectual property coordinator for the CERT/CC and US-CERT and is the departmental liaison for the SEI Technical Communication team. Additionally, Hayes helps maintain the CERT website.

Before joining the SEI, Hayes worked in the Information Services Department at the Norwest Corporation (now Wells Fargo) as an editor of standard operating procedures (SOP) manuals and was promoted to manager of the SOP editing team.

Prior to that, he founded Hayes Communications, a private communications consultancy which he still maintains. Hayes Communications offers services such as technical writing and editing, marketing, grantwriting, research, web page production, and public relations.

Hayes received a BA in English Writing from the University of Pittsburgh, completing the requirements for a triple major in Journalism, Fiction, and Literary Nonfiction. At the graduate level, he studied rhetoric at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, technical editing at the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis, technical writing at Carnegie Mellon University, and strategic planning and organizational management at the Heinz School of Public Policy and Management. Hayes is a member of the Society for Technical Communication. His hobbies are flying airplanes, studying foreign languages, and playing the classical guitar.
